Use a Kindle as a bedside clock
E-ink is ideal for a clock: no glow, readable in daylight, and it only needs to change once a minute. A Kindle's browser can do it with no jailbreak.
Bedside mode
KindleHub's bedside mode shows a full-screen clock with 26 watch faces, the weather, and a timer. Only the digits that change are redrawn, so the screen does not flash every minute.
An alarm without sound
A Kindle browser cannot play sound, so the alarm wakes you with the screen light instead. Gentle, but a heavy sleeper may want a backup.
Battery
Keep it plugged in overnight. A Kindle left awake for hours uses far more power than one that sleeps between pages.
Opening it on your Kindle
- On the Kindle, open the menu and choose Web Browser (on some models it is under Experimental or the … menu).
- Type kindlehub.pro into the address bar.
- Bookmark it. Nothing to install, no jailbreak, and a firmware update cannot break it.
Questions
Can a Kindle be used as a clock?
Yes. A web page in the Kindle browser can show a full-screen clock, and e-ink makes it readable without any glow.
Does the Kindle alarm make a sound?
No. The Kindle browser cannot play audio, so the alarm uses the screen light instead.
Will it drain the battery?
Staying awake uses more power than reading, so keep it plugged in overnight.
