Kindle browser not loading websites? Why, and what to do
The Kindle's web browser runs an old browser engine that Amazon rarely updates. Many modern sites rely on newer code that it cannot run, so they load blank, half-drawn, or refuse to serve a Kindle at all.
Quick things to try
- Type the full address, starting with https://. The search box is tied to Amazon search and often fails.
- Use a site's mobile or plain version if it has one.
- For searching, light pages like html.duckduckgo.com work well.
- Turn on JavaScript and images in the browser settings.
Remote: load the page somewhere else
KindleHub's Browser app has a Remote button. It loads the page on a server in a modern browser and sends it to your Kindle as a picture; tap the picture and the tap goes through. Sites that never loaded on a Kindle work this way.
The limits: every update is a full e-ink refresh, there is no sound, and each tap makes a round trip, so slow Wi-Fi feels slow. Do not sign in to anything sensitive through it, as you would not on a shared computer.
Opening it on your Kindle
- On the Kindle, open the menu and choose Web Browser (on some models it is under Experimental or the … menu).
- Type kindlehub.pro into the address bar.
- Bookmark it. Nothing to install, no jailbreak, and a firmware update cannot break it.
Questions
Why won't websites load on my Kindle?
The Kindle browser uses an old engine. Many modern sites use code it cannot run, so they appear blank or broken.
Can I update the Kindle browser?
No. It is part of the Kindle's firmware and only changes when Amazon updates it.
Is there a better browser for Kindle?
Not without jailbreaking. KindleHub's Remote button gets around it by loading pages on a server and showing them to you as pictures.
